Definition of veganism

Veganism embodies a philosophy and lifestyle that aims to minimize, to the greatest extent possible, the exploitation and suffering of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose. It advocates for the adoption of animal-free alternatives, benefiting animals, humans, and the environment alike. In dietary terms, veganism involves abstaining from all products derived wholly or partly from animals.

There are numerous paths to embracing veganism, but all vegans share a commitment to a plant-based diet, avoiding all animal-derived foods such as meat (including fish, shellfish, and insects), dairy, eggs, and honey. Additionally, vegans steer clear of animal-derived materials, products tested on animals, and venues that exploit animals for entertainment.

Individuals may choose to adopt a vegan lifestyle for various reasons. Some are motivated by ethical concerns regarding farmed animal practices and animal exploitation, while others are driven by environmental considerations. Whatever the motivation, I’m Vegan is dedicated to supporting everyone on their journey towards veganism.

So what do vegans eat?

Embarking on a vegan diet offers an abundance of exciting foods and flavors to explore. With its rich diversity, a vegan diet encompasses a wide array of fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, seeds, beans, and pulses. These ingredients can be combined in endless variations, guaranteeing a culinary journey filled with excitement and satisfaction. Whether you’re craving curry or cake, pasties or pizzas, all your favorite dishes can be adapted to suit a vegan diet using plant-based ingredients.

It's not just about diet

Vegans are committed to avoiding the exploitation of animals in all aspects of life, driven by compassion and ethical considerations. It’s surprising how many products, from accessories and clothing to makeup and bathroom items, contain animal-derived ingredients or have been tested on animals. However, in today’s world, there are readily available and affordable alternatives to nearly every conventional product.

Other aspects of vegan living

In west countries, medications must undergo animal testing to ensure their safety for human use. However, it’s important to note that the I’m Vegan project develop by EdVerso International does not advise against using prescribed medication. A vegan who prioritizes their health is a valuable advocate for the movement. Instead, you can inquire with your GP or pharmacist about medication options that do not contain animal-derived ingredients, such as gelatine or lactose. For more information, you can visit the medicines website, which provides details about prescribed medications in your Country, including ingredients lists.

For those supporting medical charities, it may be worthwhile to verify whether your chosen charity conducts animal testing. Many charities have opted out of animal testing, and some vegans prefer to support organizations actively seeking alternative testing methods.

Vegans abstain from supporting any form of animal exploitation, including activities such as visiting zoos, aquariums, or participating in dog or horse racing. Instead, consider visiting and supporting animal sanctuaries that offer safe and nurturing environments for rescued animals.
